Keyboard Gymnastics
Keyboard Gymnastics is an achievement program for piano students, beginning to advanced. It is designed to create well-rounded musicians and pianists. Students are tested in 7 areas of study: Theory, Ear-training, Technic, Sight-reading, Performance, Ensemble, and Creative Project. 10 or more levels of study are included in each area. Students are entered at their individual level in each are- not one level across the board. This motivates the student to be at the proper level and to reach their potential in all of these important areas of study. Students may enter a few or all of the events.
The events are passed off throughout the year. At the Ensemble event students perform a duet, trio, or concerto on an adjudicated recital. At the Creative Project event students create projects on a music subject which are displayed or performed for judges. Your teacher may give you a list of possible project ideas before the event. The Sight-reading event may be combined with the Creative Project event. At the Sight-reading event students are asked to sight-read a short music excerpt and are given a score.
Technic is an ongoing event- meaning that when a student is ready to pass off a technic level they are instructed to call a technic tester and make an appointment to pass of their technic level. More than one technic level may be passed off during the year. The highest score for the year is the one that is calculated into the cumulative score. Technic may also be passed off at other event days.
At the Performance event students are assigned a performance time and perform two pieces on an adjudicated recital. The Theory and Ear-training events are tests given in the teacher's studio as scheduled by the teacher. Each student's scores for these tests are combined with the student's other event scores to determine their cumulative score.
Each student is rewarded for their efforts. The awards ceremony is held at the end of the Keyboard Gymnastics year. Awards and prizes are given for outstanding achievement in each individual event as well as for completing all 7 events with a passing score (7.0 or higher.) Only those who complete all 7 events with passing scores are eligible for the Outstanding Student Award and the gold, silver, and bronze medals for each age-division. Prizes and awards may include cash, gift certificates to music stores, hamburger and ice-cream cone certificates, movie passes, an ipod, etc.
